Storm Distance Calculator Calculates the Distance of a Storm
Storm Distance Calculator Tracks the Distance of Lightning on Your iPhone and iPad
If you ever get caught in a thunderstorm there are two things you have to make sure you have with you. 1) a place to get cover and 2) an app to tell you how far you are from danger. Luckily for you, you’ll never have to find a place to get cover as long as you have your iPhone or iPad with you. There is an iPhone and iPad app called Storm Distance Calculator that will warn you of thunderstorms in your area before you end up getting caught up in one.
The iPhone and iPad app is really simple to operate and doesn’t require anything more than a keen sense of hearing and hand eye coordination to use. In order for the app to calculate how far you are from the storm all you have to do is tap on the screen when you hear lightening and again when you hear thunder. The delay between the two events gives an indicator of how far the thunderstorm is and the app gives you advice on what course of action you should take.
Although operating the app is fairly simple, understanding the explanation about how the app calculates the distance of a thunderstorm based on your tapping of the screen is little bit more complex and may require you to revisit some of your physics lessons. This concept can however be summarized as follows: Because light travels faster than sound, we can expect a 5 second delay between the sound of thunder and flash of lightening to equal a distance of one mile from the point where the sound was heard. If that sounds too technical, don’t worry, you don’t need to know any of that stuff. But you should know that these are the calculations ensure that you always get an accurate result each time you use the app.
Storm Distance Calculator can be used on your iPhone or iPad and is free for you to download from the iTunes App Store.
