Despite having an extensive collection of games, the app store doesn’t offer many options for people who are interested in pirate games. Pirates Gulf is only one of a few pirate-themed games available in the app store, and I recently had the chance to test it out. Based on my first impressions, it’s everything your would expect in a mobile pirate shooter.

Once installed, you have the option of linking the app with their Facebook or Twitter account and selecting their language — English or Russian. You’ll then need to sit through a brief tutorial about the different aspects of gameplay. In short, you’re objective is to shoot the enemy pirate boat by using the controls located on the bottom-left and bottom-right hand corner of the screen. It takes a while to get used to the layout, but it becomes more intuitive after 4 or 5 rounds of gameplay.

You’re awarded a certain amount of loot every time you successfully defeat an opponent, which can be used to unlock new boats, weapons, and powerups. There’s also an in-game store where you can buy various items to improve your gaming experience. Every achievement you unlock shows up in the “Achievements” section of the main menu, alongside a leaderboard containing the “most dangerous” users around the around.

All in all, Pirates Gulf is a decent game if you’re looking for something new in the arcade genre. The app is free to download from the app store for devices iOS 8.0 or later.
