With the rise in popularity of racing over the last decade or so, one would expect a surge of racing games on the market. And while there are several styles of racing, perhaps none better known with an international feel than Formula 1 racing. Developer  Razmobi has gone decidedly retro with Formula Micro GP1 for the iPhone and iPad.

Your gaming options are representative of most racing games, with a couple of settings to change, and then we are off to select our muscle machine. Each car has a specific set of attributes which may suit the player and track accordingly. The race track selection mimics that of the Gran Turismo series, but the game play is a bit simplified and old school – think RC Pro-Am-ish for you classic NES’ers – or even Spy Hunter minus all of the carnage. The overhead racing view is not something commonly seen, and one can appreciate this refreshing aspect.

There are pit stop areas clearly marked on the tracks where you will have to stop often to change out the tires, and turbo boosts or “Kers” are found throughout the race. You can opt for a single race or participate in a season where each race carries points towards the ultimate racing title.

While we can appreciate the simplicity and old school style game play; the graphics (this is decidedly better on the iPads larger screen), especially the sparsely populated crowd could use an upgrade, along with the monotone engine sound bite that simply loops over and over.

While most (and we do) will appreciate the simple controls, Formula Micro GP 1 does pull off some challenging game play, and you will need plenty of practice laps to master the control over the car as well as becoming familiar with the individual tracks.

Despite the many, many applications in today’s market for every kind of gadget, it is very rare that we find a single game that is the whole package. More often than not, there is an aspect or two where an app comes up short—whether in game play or appearance or some other.

Just Funny Games tries to overcome this common occurrence by producing a game for the iPhone and iPad that’s about as good as an application can get. Check out Jake Escapes!, a new arcade game that provides plenty of excitement and action.

The premise is that Jake, the world’s greatest thief, is now bored of his profession and is seeking thrills elsewhere. More specifically, he has now stolen an alien artefact and is on the run from everyone, while attempting to handle the greatest power in the world.

Users help Jake climb buildings while blasting enemies from different windows. There are different objectives for every level, as well as different placements of the enemies to make things more difficult.

Game play is easy to get a hang of, as you simply swipe the screen to control the character’s movements. Jake Escapes! is responsive and quick, so there are no frustrating losses and stalls.

There are only 17 levels to the game, meaning it can be finished quite quickly. Hopefully, future versions of this game will offer longer game play along with more challenging levels. Despite the relative shortness of the entire game, the quality will not leave you disappointed. The 3D graphics are stunning, especially with the new iPad’s retina screen display. Even in the iPhone or iPod Touch, one will be able to appreciate the craftsmanship of the game designers with the detailed backgrounds and excellent graphics. Of Jake Escapes!

Arcade shooters sometimes make the most interesting strategic games, managing to hold their own purely because of their addictive game play.

One such game is the Tank-O-Mania: War of Wonders, which takes you around the entire world to free famous cities from enemies. Developed by Retina Software, this game adds a bit of world geography to a game that mostly consists of simple shooting.

You are tasked to blast away each and every enemy with the use of five different weapons like mines, grenades and rockets. There is even a helicopter for an air strike when it is necessary – get the help of power-ups when you need to.

With the weapons and abilities you are provided, one would think this would be an easy game to finish. Not so. Twenty-four levels prove to be a worthy challenge, with more than thirty different types of enemies to defeat. It will take developed skill and strategy to make it to the end.

What makes this Tank-O-Mania really interesting is that you get to hop across continents to save global powers such as the US, China, Egypt and more. MindFeud is one such board games on the iPhone or iPad. Developed by Monkeybin Studios, this fun application offers a good time while exercising your mind at the same time.

The premise and rules of the game is simple: just match the different tiles in formations. While straight-forward, this is an absolute challenge! The difficulty of some levels rivals that of Sudoku and that sort of games.

This is actually a social board game that you can play with fellow users in real time. If no one is online, challenge ADAMA, the automatic playing bot who will prove to be a more than worthy opponent.

Working in a way that is reminiscent of WordFeud, Words with Friends and Scrabble, this is an application that is almost guaranteed success due to its predecessors. Global leaderboards provide the challenge you might need—you’ll definitely want to be chasing the lead scorers.

Appearance-wise, there is nothing negative to note. It is sleek and sophisticated, much more so than you would expect a board game application to be.
