Photo sharing is one of the most common things people do on their smartphones, whether it’s through social media or email. CodePix takes this activity a step further by giving users the option of encrypting their images with unique passcodes. The app not only makes your photos more secure, but it also transforms the experience of viewing photos into something entertaining.

When you download the app, you’ll be asked to log in with Facebook or create an account with your email and username. After creating an account, you’re shown a brief tutorial highlighting the features of the app. The app’s premise is simple — upload your photo, create a passcode and publish it to the community.

You’re only given ten tries to figure out how to unlock each image using the hints provided. Once unlocked, you’ll be able to see the full image, along with user comments and basic statistics about the post. You can also share the unlocked image via a direct link or Facebook and filter out posts according to Latest, Most Popular, and Most Difficult.

Creating an image that others can unlock is a relatively simple process. To do so, all you have to do is take a photo using the built-in camera or import one of your photos from your library. After selecting a photo, another screen asks you to modify the cover photo — this is the photo that everyone sees before unlocking the full image. You can then add filters, splash effects, drawings and blur or focus on your cover photo to make it harder to discern.

Once you’ve created a cover photo, the last step involves creating a lock photo, which contains a gesture lock or text lock depending on your preference. The former option requires that you draw a pattern on the image to unlock it while the latter option simply asks you to add a text passcode for users. Only people who draw the same pattern or text code will see the unlocked image. You can also caption your cover photo to provide hints and caption your reveal photo to give more context.

Overall, CodePix is a great app for anyone looking for a new way to share photos with friends and family. The app is free in the app store for all devices iOS 7.0 or later.
